Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was a colonial British law that criminalized homosexuality in India until it was ruled unconstitutional by the supreme court in 2018. ‘Private Circulation Only’ is a sociolegal research project that takes the form of a modular zine.
My zine functions as an intervention that queers the archive to present a sociolegal history of section 377 as a case study for the afterlife of colonialism in contemporary India. With unorthodox binding using a ring binder and legal typesetting, this zine subverts the format of a legal folder to present a counter history of queer life.
